Puppy Sundaes

Luckily, today was the last day of the heatwave. It is supposed to storm tonight and be a little cooler tomorrow. I did work out today but I did yoga and weights-I just couldn't muster the cardio! Oh well, I'm back on it tomorrow.

Someone has been having a particularly hard time with the heat:

He has been hiding in the bathroom-the coolest room in the house. Poor bubby. There was some relief when we brought this home for him:

How sweet is that-the diner down the street from us does puppy sundaes! The crazy part is that they do them for free-I felt kind of bad because we obviously don't eat ice cream so we didn't buy anything,so I made sure to leave a big tip.

Alf's Red Wheat Cereal Review

I know I have been doing lots of reviews lately-I guess I have been feeling adventurous in trying new things? Hey, I have my staples-Teddy's PB(although now it tastes super salty after getting the plain old ground kind-I may have to convert),Crystal Hot Sauce,Drew's Lemon Goddess Dressing, etc.-but I am a sucker for a new product and I like reading reviews-so why not throw my opinion into the mix?

As you can see from the pic, I already opened the bag-OOOPS. So here it is: Alf's Red Wheat Cereal. It is unfortunately exclusive to Walmart but if you are forced to go in there like lots of us are from time to time, it is worth picking up. I paid 99 cents for it which contains eleven 1 cup servings. I usually only eat 1/2 cup at a time in a yogurt parfait, so I get 22 servings-quite the deal! It is not vitamin fortified, but it is 100% all natural, good tasting and contains a little fiber and protein too. It has a good nutty crunch and would be great topped with some fruit or maple syrup in your breakfast bowl. Seriously, in an age where even "healthy" cereals have tons of sugars and cost $4-$5 a box, this stuff is a godsend. I honestly don't think it is a great idea to overload out bodies on added vitamins anyway-if you take a multi and eat a balanced diet, you don't need to eat them all over again in your cereal. It just doesn't make sense. It is usually located on the bottom shelf by the Malt-O Meal bagged cereals,so it could be easy to miss.

PROS:

Awesome price.Simple and natural. Not a lot of packaging. Tastes good. Can be fully customized to your liking.

CONS:

Only available at Wally World.

VERDICT:

I say give it a go. For the price it is worth seeing if you dig it. If you have kiddos make a little breakfast buffet with all sorts of toppings and I bet they will be on board too!

Her Garden Grows...

Remember my lame little garden that I started? Well it is starting to pull its weight around here-check it out:

Holy smokes on this sucker! The Black Prince tomatoes are outta control-no tomatoes yet but a few blossoms. The vine on this guy is crazy-much better than when I tried growing tomatoes in a pot last year.

Jalapenos-this plant is the star of the garden so far! We already tried one-not too spicy but delicious. I was always nervous to try and grow peppers-I thought they needed a super hot climate but it seems to be doing okay.

The zucchini just started blossoming. I am really excited because zucchini is my favorite veggie-these are doing great in the bag. The cucumbers I planted in the same way are pretty lame-o-I don't know if anything will come of those-BOO!

In an unexpected turn of events-we found these grow all over our property! Blackberries, raspberries and even some wild strawberries. Some of the blackberries were ripe and they are sweet and GOOD! I can't wait to harvest them all-there are a ton!

Growing food is such an amazing experience-I started small this year just to get my feet wet-but I really love it. Everyday when I go down to check the mail and let out Mulder I stop and check on all my plants.

Who's that puppy helping his mom check on the abundant harvest?

"On The Go" Drinks

"On the go" drinks seem to be getting very popular these days. They are a good idea-less paper cups and plastic bottles for one thing! Let's take a look at two different ones I tried this week:

Starbucks Vias are little packets of instant coffee that you just add water to. I was SUPER excited about these because everyone knows I am a coffee freak :). I know instant coffee gets a bad rap-I mean that stuff hasn't had any new advances since Folger's Crystals in the seventies right? I figured that Starbucks would pull through and make some amazing product that actually tastes like the real thing. Unfortunately I was wrong! I tried the Italian Roast flavor and it was a muddy murky and bitter mess. Super sad too-I really thought I was going to be able to get my Starbucks fix any time I pleased. Boo. Well it might be okay if you are camping and need to get caffeinated quickly-but I think you would be better bringing tea bags and going that route. It didn't dissolve all the way either-there were little coffee dust specks all over my mug.

Next up-Crystal Light Pure Fitness Water-grape flavor.

Usually during my workout I would drink a liter of plain water and a liter of Powerade Zero. I LOVE the Powerade but it was getting a little expensive having one everyday! Plus I needed some type of fitness drink-I usually work out at least 90 minutes so I feel like it gives me some boost. Well I have just finished my first box of this-10 in all-and I really love it. I tastes wonderful-is somewhat more naturally sweetened-and it is much cheaper to buy a box of this for about $2 than a $1 Powerade everyday. It dissolved completely and wasn't sticky or sugary tasting at all. I recommend it-it is exactly what it claims to be. I plan on trying more flavors!

All in all,I think "on the go" drinks are a great idea-environmentally they make sense, you don't have to lug cases of anything in the house when you get home from the store(one of my little pet peeves) and it is much cheaper. A lot of times you are paying for plain water with some other stuff added. Make it yourself and save some money!

Brand New Shiny Mat!

Look what I FINALLY broke down and bought today! The pink one was just about dead. Every time I worked out there were bits every where. I got my use out of it though-I have used it almost every day since September so I can't complain! The purple one is actually the same mat, just different color. They are the plain jane Danskin ones-I am curious if the more expensive ones are worth it-are they?

On another note-I happened to be at Wal-Mart today for my eye appointment($176 for contacts-PUKE!)-and I thought I would pick up a few cucumbers for a salad tonight-none to be found! Weird. Also no zucchini-there must have been a mad rush or something.

What kind of mat do you use? Are the expensive ones worth the money?

Olive Hummus

I apologize in advance for the lack of amounts in this recipe-I just wung it! I was bored, snacky and ended up with a gem.

  • Toast 1 cup of sesame seeds in a dry pan. I did JUST until I saw they started to release oil. DON"T BROWN THEM! And keep a close eye-they can go too far in a second-I know this from experience.

  • Put in to processor with about 1/4 cup olive oil. Process and scrape down the bowl until it starts to form a paste. Add another 1/4 cup or so of oil and repeat the processing and scraping until nice and smooth.

  • Add one can of drained chickpeas. Process, adding touches of oil until you get the texture you want. Thick is nice for spreading in wraps and celery and it uses less oil-that's the route I took :)

  • Add lemon juice and salt to taste. I used about 4 Tbs juice and 10-15 grinds of salt.

  • Chop up some green olives and stir in. I think sun-dried tomatoes would be KILLER in this.

  • ENJOY!

I think what makes this special is the high tahini to chickpea ratio-the hummus we get at our little Lebanese bakery has that same flavor. Not to mention it is less messy because you make it all on one bowl! I do realize that sesame seeds are expensive-we are lucky enough to get them really cheap through a friend's bakery. If it is cheaper for you to buy tahini then use that instead. Also-remember that if you are adding olives that you won't need to add as much salt to the mixture.

Naked Nut Butter

MMMMMMMMM!!!!!! We took our weekly trip to Peter's Cornucopia to stock up on our natural food supplies today. We usually buy our tofu, bulk items(millet, quinoa, cashews) and usually a few new "fun" items to try. Now,I am a DEVOTED fan of Smucker's natural PB-it is extremely roasty tasting for lack of a better word and Ryan is DIE HARD natural Teddy's PB. I just so happened to be out and figured I would just get some at Peter's. I decided to go with the kind you grind yourself-it is only $2.99 /lb. for the PB and $6.99/lb. for the AB. I know I will probably be crucified for this, but I actually prefer peanut butter-I generally don't like the bitter taste in almond butter. Same with these-both are really good-and I like the AB a little more than the jarred-probably because it didn't cost me a bundle! The taste is just pure nut flavor and the texture is slightly grainy which is what I prefer. Creamy PB kinda freaks me out now-lol. I tried that Better 'N Peanut Butter before and the texture almost made me die-weird and gummy-blech. The next thing on my list to try is the PB2 that you just reconstitute with water-it is so expensive with shipping though! I am trying to get Peter's to carry it so I can just scoop it off the shelf and not have to pay shipping.

Check out my fitness challenge page-I have an updated plan that I am starting today. Super clean eating for two weeks!

Easy Veggie Garden

So I saw this article in Mother Earth News and decided it was finally time to take the plunge and start a veggie garden. I started with jalapenos, zucchini and cucumbers---here they are in all their glory:

And yes,I fell for the Topsy-Turvy trend-Black Prince tomatoes-I can't wait!

I plan on doing some container lettuces, herbs and I might try to grow a pumpkin.I also want to include a pic of our rhododendron bush-it is so gorgeously in bloom right now:

And my little woodland friend Wilbur the Welcome Bear-just cuz he is so cute!

Frugal Beauty

Remember when I was talking about the homemade sugar scrub? Well yesterday I did baking soda-and it worked even better. Just keep your mouth shut tight because it tastes horrible! Another cool thing I came upon by chance today is this article by "Daily Bread"-check it out here.

Every Other Day!

As you all know by now,I am trying out all sorts of tactics to save money these days-a penny saved really is a penny earned!

One of the things I am doing now is cutting back the frequency of using things. For example, I used to take a vitamin every day(expensive ones-RAW ONE),and I figured I eat pretty healthfully so I could get away with taking one every other day. I feel just as good and I will make my bottle stretch much longer. Another one is shampooing my hair. Every other day is just fine. If do a sweaty workout, I just rinse and condition.

It may seem that these things don't save very much money, but over the long haul they really do! My vitamins for instance:

A bottle of 75 costs $30

One everyday for a year costs $146 (PUKE!)

One every other day costs $73

That adds up! In all reality I probably could get cheaper vitamins or not take them at all,but I am not quite so comfortable with that option yet. The moral of the story is whether its shampoo, vitamins or a magazine habit, consuming or using less can really benefit your pocket book!

Cheap Face Scrub!

In my quest to use it up,make do or do without I came up with this little trick today. I have always used St Ives. Apricot Scrub for as long as I can remember and I love it. Sadly I ran out of my stash and while it is not expensive, I do not want to buy anymore right now. Before if something like this happened I would have driven to the store and bought some, wasting gas and time.  However,my vain old self will not let my skin become all rough and scaggy looking,so I still need to exfoliate in some manner. Enter: Sugar In The Raw packet I had in my cupboard. I mixed it with a little bit of my gel facial wash and scrubbed it up. It worked perfectly because it dissolved a little bit and wasn't too harsh on my delicate red-headed skin. I think it would work really nice with cornmeal as well.

Steps Toward Self-Sufficiency

We are trying to make some progress towards eventually being self-sufficient. Right now we are working on fixing up our house in town and we are going to try and sell for a profit. I quit my job so we can accomplish that quicker. Those are some of the big steps we have begun to take but the smaller ones are almost harder sometimes because it involves breaking little habits that you don't really think about. Here are some of those things I am working at right now:

  • Drinking more water and tea made at home rather than soda and coffee out
  • Making our groceries last longer, using stuff that I keep in the pantry
  • Getting rid of cable-a time sucker and a money sucker
  • Using the library more-for entertainment and information
That is just a little of what I'm working on right now. I must say that it was really nice to get up this morning, eat some fruit, read the paper, exercise, eat some cereal, take a shower and then start some house work and computer work. I'm going to work on listening to my natural rhythms and try to find the times where I am most productive. I realize that I am VERY lucky to be able to do this because not everyone has this opportunity. Here's to the first day out of the rat race!!!!
